In this research, John Millington Synge’s play, The Playboy Of the western World has been studied based on Northrop Frye’s Theory of mythos. John Millington Synge is one of the prominent figures of the Irish literary revival and theatre of the 20th century. In the first half of the 20th century, Irish theatre emerged from the shadow of British cultural hegemony through the artists who tried to revive the country’s literature, and the Abbey Theatre was founded with the aim of showing the authenticity of Irish culture and art. Unlike other members of Abbey Theatre, Synge has reacted to the Irish society and its contradictions in his works by paying attention to folklore themes and also by using myths and archetypes in a realistic context, and based on this; it is possible to recognize a diverse range of fictional modes and types of phases in his plays. In other words, what made him important as a significant figure in the literature was the use of folklore themes, as well as the use of symbols, mythological characters and archetypes, which he used in a naturalistic and realistic way in order to criticize the situation of his time. This point of view, considering that Northrop Frye, one of the most significant theorists in the field of literature and theatre, by expanding theory of modes and theory of symbols to establish a balance between the two poles of imagination and reality, has presented an innovative way of classifying literary works through his archetypal criticism. His opinion, especially the theory of myths, in order to analyze Synge’s plays, which sought to create a balance between the naturalist intellectual drama and symbolist imaginative drama, has provided a suitable entry to understand the elegance and complexities of his dramatic world. Frye has considered most of the literary works of 20th century and after that to be a kind of return to the myth, and how this claim has occurred, especially in the analysis of the 20th century writers such as Synge, has provided a specific conceptual framework for studying his plays. Therefore, in the upcoming research, an attempt has been made to show how this thesis can be investigated in the narrative and thematic structure of this play in the aforementioned theoretical framework, and to provide a wider view of the drama of the 20th century, and especially with the character of Synge.
