This study aims to provide a detailed analysis of the representation of ethnic identity and indigenous culture in the documentary The Colorful Island (2014), directed by Khosrow Sinai. The documentary portrays the life of environmental artist Ahmad Nadalian on Hormuz Island and, through the active participation of local residents, seeks to represent the island’s cultural and social identity using diverse visual elements, local language, physical spaces, and contemporary art. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, which views identity as a fluid, multilayered process influenced by social and cultural discourses. The research method involves qualitative content analysis with an interpretive and critical approach, applying this theory to examine the discursive structures in the documentary in depth. The main research question explores how The Colorful Island represents the ethnic identity and indigenous culture of Hormuz Island and what this representation signifies within the field of cultural studies. The findings indicate that the documentary critically engages with the process of recognizing and reconstructing local identity, highlighting the crucial role of voices, narratives, and lived experiences in generating meaning in documentary cinema. Furthermore, art and media can serve as effective tools for preserving, reconstructing, and sustaining local and ethnic identities, contributing to cultural coexistence and identity diversity in multicultural societies. This study emphasizes the role of documentary media and underscores the importance of a sensitive, responsible, and precise approach to identity in visual media.
