In recent years, contemporary animation has increasingly departed from conventional formal and aesthetic paradigms, embracing new approaches to the organization of image, movement, and rhythm. This transformation has drawn growing scholarly attention to the role of formal elements in shaping viewers’ perceptual experience. This study examines Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse within the framework of Predictive Processing theory to explain this formal transformation and investigate how it reshapes the experience of perceived time. Adopting a qualitative, descriptive–analytical approach, the study draws on literature review, analysis of production documents, and qualitative content analysis of the film. The findings reveal that five key components—variable animation frame rates, the elimination of motion blur, the use of speed lines and graphic cues, comic panel–inspired visual composition, and the alternation of acceleration and pause in visual rhythm—interact to create a distinctive temporal system that departs from the conventions of mainstream three-dimensional animation. Interpreted through the framework of Predictive Processing, these formal strategies disrupt perceptual expectations, prompting the brain to continuously update its predictive models, shift attentional focus, and actively engage in the perceptual process. Consequently, the experience of time becomes more dynamic, conscious, and perceptually salient. In addition to contributing to theoretical discussions, the findings offer practical insights for the deliberate design of visual rhythm and animation timing, particularly for Iranian animation practitioners.
