As a distinct genre within non-fiction cinema, poetic documentary is grounded in mechanisms of emotional associativity, visual metaphor, and formal authenticity. Given the richness of Iranian prose literature and its inherent latent potentials, this study aims to examine the nexus between Iranian prose traditions and the structure of “Narration” within this cinematic mode—a relationship that remains under-theorized in contemporary interdisciplinary studies.
Employing a qualitative approach grounded in a rhetorical-semiotic discourse analysis strategy, this research explores the interaction between text and image. The research corpus consists of three seminal Iranian poetic documentaries—The Jam-e Hasanlou (Aslani), Chegh (Aslani), and The Hills of Marlik (Golestan)—selected through purposive sampling. The findings reveal that the integration of Persian prose into the Narration of these films can be categorized into three distinct patterns: the direct incorporation of classical texts, the use of implicit references to religious and mystical literature, and the creation of original, authorial prose leveraging the phonetic and semantic capacities of the Persian language.
In all these patterns, the Narration serves a primarily sensory-emotional function, wherein the linkage between speech and image is realized through metaphorical association, symbolic synonymy, and dialectical contrast. Ultimately, the results demonstrate that beyond its formal and musical qualities, Iranian prose maintains an organic connection with the core components of the poetic documentary by facilitating the production of secondary meanings and evocative capabilities. Thus, the creative re-articulation of this literary tradition plays a pivotal role in shaping the identity and advancing the qualitative standards of Iranian documentary cinema
