Historical sites cannot be regarded merely as neutral settings for the placement of performance; rather, they embody dense layers of memory, meaning, spatial order, and conservation imperatives, which render their relationship with environmental theatre a complex and critical issue. The present study aims to analyze how this relationship is formed and to explain the conditions under which performance in historical sites is not simply realized, but rather constrained, directed, or suspended. This research adopts a qualitative approach, using a descriptive-analytical method and a case study strategy. Data were collected through documentary research, field visits, and interpretive spatial reading, and were analyzed within a theoretical framework based on the integration of Henri Lefebvre’s concept of the production of space and Richard Schechner’s approach to environmental theatre. Three significant historical sites in Shiraz Karim Khan Citadel, Eram Garden, and Persepolis were selected as case studies. The findings indicate that patterns of movement, layers of meaning, historical memory, and physical and conservation constraints in these spaces, rather than directly enabling performance, produce conditions of tension, limitation, and, at times, suspension. In this regard, Karim Khan Citadel reveals a condition of tension and control, Eram Garden a condition of soft suspension, and Persepolis a condition of conflict and suspension in relation to performance. Consequently, the historical site should be understood not as a backdrop for performance, but as an active agent in determining the limits of possibility and the refusal of performative intervention. This study seeks to shift the discussion of environmental theatre in historical spaces from the level of capacity assessment to that of a critical analysis of spatial resistance.
