Abstract

Focalization is a narratological element referring to the angle from which we see the events of the
story. Besides, Jahn (1996) introduces the term “windows of focalization” in which it is as if narrator
and focalizers open imaginary windows to the story world. Opening of these windows is always
accompanied with devices. Accordingly, this article aims at analyzing the movie, The Hours according
to Jahn’s model of focalization. The question which this paper concerns is: what are the signs or
devices which cause the windows of focalization of the narrator switch? As a result, the findings show
that the most important patterns of switching are: 1. Sounds including the music of the movie, sounds
from nature or environment, sounds related to houses, sounds and voices of people, and sounds of
clocks. 2. Cohesive symbols such as flowers, the novel, Mrs. Dalloway, cake, and so forth. 3. What
characters say or do or show in common. 4. Other markers like titling.
